Gulab Mirror

Product Description

Throughout our lives, we encounter objects that seem to possess a soul, encapsulating the personality of those who cherished them. One such piece is the Gulab Mirror, an heirloom design conceived by the late Mr. Sushil Kumar Sancheti (1936–2020).

Born in Momasar, Rajasthan, and later settling in Kolkata, Lt. Sushil Kumar Sancheti—affectionately known to his family as "Mamosa"—was a man of rare equilibrium. He lived truly to his name, embodying a good nature that bridged contradictions; he was a man who balanced the sharp pragmatism of a realist with the deep empathy of a humanist, valuing financial prudence just as deeply as he valued humanity. Though he spent the majority of his career as a dedicated professional at Carry Co., a transport firm in Kolkata, his creative spirit found expression in his personal environment. Neither an architect nor a trained furniture designer, he nevertheless possessed a clear, uncompromising vision for the objects that surrounded him.

Born from a specific daily ritual—his need for a perfect shaving mirror—he commissioned a local carpenter to execute his vision. Crafted from robust Burma Teak, the mirror was built through a process of instruction and partnership, where he guided the craftsman’s hand to suit his precise needs. For decades, he maintained it with a diligence that reflected his character.

Today, under the direction of 14 Number, the Gulab Mirror enters a new chapter. Through this series of reproductions, the design is carefully carried forward—its proportions, intent, and spirit preserved, while being thoughtfully adapted for present-day living. It stands as an homage to the everyday creators—men and women who, knowingly or unknowingly, embed memories of love, utility, and care into the artifacts they leave behind - for us.
