Chandigarh Committee Chair

Product Description

Pierre Jeanneret was a Swiss architect who spent much of his career in the shadow of his famous cousin, Le Corbusier. But in 1951, he stepped into the light, moving to India for what would become his life's masterwork: Chandigarh. While Le Corbusier was the grand visionary for this new capital city, Jeanneret was the man on the ground who made it real. For fifteen years, he served as the city's Chief Architect, supervising projects, designing public buildings, and mentoring a new generation of Indian architects. He didn't just build a city; he fell in love with a country. His deep respect for Indian culture and craftsmanship became the soul of the entire project.

As Chandigarh's government buildings rose, they needed furniture —thousands of pieces. This chair was Jeanneret's brilliant solution. Designed around 1953-1954 for the High Court and administrative offices, its creation was a masterclass in modernist pragmatism. The iconic V-shaped "compass" legs offered immense strength with an elegant, lightweight feel. The frame was built from solid teak, a local wood chosen for its durability in the harsh climate. Most importantly, Jeanneret collaborated directly with Indian artisans, blending his European design sensibilities with their centuries-old woodworking skills. This was not industrial mass production; it was a partnership that resulted in a robust, beautiful, and profoundly local object.

The Nature of the Material
  • Wood is an inherently unique medium. Because our objects are meticulously honed by hand, no two pieces will ever share the exact same grain, character, or shade. These natural variations are not flaws, but the enduring marks of authenticity. Please bear in mind that the final finish or fabric tone may also appear subtly different depending on the lighting of your space or the calibration of your screen.
Care & Maintenance
  • Intended strictly for indoor environments.
  • To clean, gently wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately.
  • Protect the piece from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Avoid strong cleaning products; harsh chemicals will strip the natural finish.
